The documentation package currently in print was created for
version 2.03, although we are currently shipping version 2.05. This
document will detail the changes made to the program since the
printing of the documentation.
Additions to version 2.05 included the addition of two new
commands: "Delete Game" in the Project Menu for the Empire screen
(Keyboard equivalent ^D), and the "Delete Map" command in the
Project Menu for the Map Editor (keyboard equivalent also ^D).
These commands allow you to delete the corresponding types of files
on your disk from within Empire. Simply select the command, and you
will be presented with Empire's file-requester, from which you can
select the file to be deleted.
Other enhancements made for version 2.05 include the
highlighting of the city (or other map square) when being shown the
"Info" or "Production" requesters, as well as the highlighting of
the current area of the display when being shown the World Map.
One other change of note: with a "Demo mode" game (i.e., all
computer players), the delay factor that slows down the unit moves
in order to allow you to observe the moves better is now tied to the
value set for "Message Delay", via the Delay command (refer to page
39 in your manual). By setting the "Message Delay" to a lower
value, you can speed up the progress of this type of game
significantly (although you will have to watch a lot closer to
observe the individual moves).

The version upgrade to version 2.04 also occurred after the
printing of the documentation. The reason for the version update
was due to the addition of a couple of features in the map editor
(which will be explained in this document), as well as the
inevitable bug fix or two. In addition, I would like to correct and
clarify the directions for using the hard-disk installation script
provided on the Empire disk. (Note that there was also a minor
problem with the original installation file which has been corrected
with this release shipment).
First, the added features: In the Map Editor, two new commands
have been added to the 'Growths' menu that are not documented in your
manual. These are 'Grow Sea Mass' (keyboard equivalent Alt-G) and
'Blotch Sea' (keyboard equivalent Alt-B). These commands work exactly
like the existing 'Grow Land Mass' and 'Blotch' commands,
respectively, except that they cause the effected squares to become
SEA squares.
Now, the manual correction: I have had some negative feedback
concerning the instructions for installing Empire on a hard-disk using
the supplied 'execute' script. The following instructions will
hopefully clarify these instructions.
In order to successfully install Empire on your hard disk, please
follow the instructions as outlined below. For the sake of example, I
am going to give the instructions with the following assumptions,
which you can change as fits your particular environment:
1. I am installing Empire on myhard-disk which is called DH0:
2. I am going to install the program into a directory (drawer)
on my hard-disk called Games.
3. My Empire game disk is in floppy drive DF0:
These instructions will attempt to make few assumptions about the
reader's knowledge of the Amiga CLI environment, and consequently they
will be pretty basic.
Step 1: Open a Command-Line-Interface (CLI) window if you are
currently in the Workbench environment, by double-clicking on the
CLI icon.
Step 2: If there currently is a directory on dh0: called Games, skip
ahead to Step 5.
Step 3: Type the following command at the CLI prompt:
makedir DH0:Games
followed by pressing the RETURN key
Step 4: Type the following command at the next CLI prompt:
copy df0:data.info to DH0:Games.info
followed by pressing the RETURN key
Step 5: Type the following command at the next CLI prompt:
cd DF0:
followed by pressing the RETURN key
Step 6: Type the following command at the next CLI prompt:
execute s/HDInstall DH0:Games/
followed by pressing the RETURN key
Empire should now be installed on your hard-disk. Enjoy!

The following credits were omitted from the printed Empire manual:
The graphics used in the Security screen and the "About Empire"
screen for the Amiga version of Empire were created by Steve Ahlstrom.
Some of the early prototype code fragments were created and
provided by Steve Ahlstrom and Dan Moore. While little of this code
was retained in the final version of Empire, it was of great
assistance to me as I began the evolutionary process of creating
Empire for the Amiga.
Special thanks also go to John Sobernheim of The Computer Room
for providing access to certain computer equipment needed in the
course of this project.
Thanks also to Mark Baldwin for providing assistance in
understanding the mechanics of the game and the original software, and
for providing moral support and encouragement (you can put away the
whip now, Mark!) when the going got tough.
